Robert E. Moneyhan is in a heap of trouble. Even before Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast, he registered domain names that he could then sell to hurricane relief groups later: KatrinaHelp.com, KatrinaDonations.com, KatrinaRelief.com and KatrinaReliefFund.com. Always thinking, this guy.
By Aug. 31, Moneyhan's sites were asking people to donate via PayPal. Fortunately, the Florida attorney general, Charles J. Crist Jr. has stepped in. Moneyhan panicked, and donated the domains to legitimate relief groups. But there are a thousand other jackals feasting on misery. Numerous phishing scams and bogus URLs lure the unwary. One Missouri-based charity even promises that donations will go only to white victims of the hurricane.
Be careful out there.

(9.9.05 03:39) Wow. Thanks for the warning. I'll make sure to only donate by going to the site of the actual charity (or by check.) Do you think this Moneyhan thought of the whole thing by himself? I wouldn't be surprised if he were working for someone slick enough to keep their own name out of it. |

(9.9.05 03:49) I was reading that a Calif. company has purchased the domain names of every hurricane for the next five years. Hurricane(name).com The company sells a valve that prevents sewage from backing up during floods. Capitalism wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the capitalists. |
