Ed Cone has some thoughts on the campaign that I wish I had said:
"So far the foreign policy aspect of this campaign has been largely about the past. There is plenty to examine in the rear-view mirror -- it’s clear that Bush was itching to take on Iraq long before 9/11, which raises legitimate questions about his rush to invade; that the war on Al Quaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan languished as he pursued this adventure; and that planning for the post-war administration of the country was ideologically driven and dangerously inadequate.
"But while it matters very much how and why we invaded Iraq, nothing can change the fact that we did, and that we are bound to that decision and its consequences. Staying the course in Iraq should be a great liberal cause, no matter how liberals felt about going to war. The United States is obligated to help create a secure and stable Iraq. Doing so will improve our own security, and falling short will make the world more dangerous than it was before we invaded."

(6.4.04 00:12) Yes, I’ve not come across this guy before but he speaks some sense. I have a lot of time for people who took a principled stand against the war, although I don’t agree with them. Some of them now realise that the only sane position is to wish the rebuilding of Iraq proves to be a success. This is the best outcome not only for our security but also for the ordinary people of Iraq and the rest of the Arab world. If this extraordinary experiment in Arab democracy works, then who knows how far it will benefit people in Syria and Saudi Arabia etc. It would deprive the terrorists of much of their support and make a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict much more likely. Sadly, most of the Reactionary Left in Europe and the US hope this experiment fails. Their hatred of America is stronger than their sympathy with the ordinary folk of Iraq. Nothing would suit them more than an increase in the sort of violence and savagery that we saw at Fallujah. Nothing shows how far the present day Left has lost its moral compass than its despicable appeasement towards racism and Islamofascism. |

(6.4.04 04:31) Well put. Things at this hour are looking grim in Iraq, and it's looking more and more like civil war. There's reports of looting in the suburbs of Badhdad, and Shite militiamen are taking control of checkpoints and command posts. The violence hasn't spread to the south, where the Brits are in control. Yet. |

(6.4.04 09:23) Hmmm, if I was in Iraq and I could see what fantastic jobs Mr Blair and Mr Bush and their supporters and employees had done in their own countries, I'd want them out! However, I do believe that, at the moment, the presence of foreign troops there is the only thing that's stopping Iraq tearing itself apart. My uninformed £0.02.

(6.4.04 15:32) Thanks for visiting, Gledster. You might be giving the "insurgents" more credit than they deserve. Poll after poll shows that most Iraqis appreciate being rid of Saddam and his torture chambers. I can't say I blame them. Just because British and American societies have problems is hardly a reason for Iraqis to wax nostalgic for Sadaam. I think the problems we're seeing now in Iraq stem from poor decision making by Bush political appointees, who overroad US military concerns about the number of troops deployed to Iraq, and the way humanitarian assistance would be prepositioned and used once the the Iraqi Army surrendered. |

(7.4.04 11:57) The polls aren't given enough coverage, I think - they're proof that this is definitely not another Vietnam, though it's hardly the clean in-and-out campaign many were hoping for. I would not have marched for either pros or antis before the war, but I would definitely march now if our governments showed sign of wanting to pull out early. |
